A cruise ship that reported over 100 people infected with norovirus on a previous voyage docked in Alaska with a second. consecutive outbreak of the illness.
The ship docked in Haines, Alaska, on Monday, July 6, reporting six crew members and one passenger with symptoms, according to reporting from The New York Post. These individuals were placed in isolation. The ship had just come from San Francisco, California, where 125 people were allegedly infected with the highly contagious gastrointestinal illness. Those affected included 102 passengers and 23 crew.
The news of the first norovirus outbreak came about over the July Fourth weekend, following the recent news that World Health Organization officials had declared the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship as officially “over.”
Officials with the cruise line at the center of these norovirus outbreaks told Forbes Magazine that they implemented “enhanced sanitation protocols” throughout the ship. Passengers and crew who reported symptoms were isolated in their cabins as a way to combat further spread.
What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is an illness that can cause acute gastroenteritis and spreads through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. It is highly contagious and spreads through the viral particles of vomit or stool of infected people, which can be accidentally ingested. This can occur by shaking hands with someone who is sick, touching an infected surface, or eating food handled by a sick person.
Common symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, headache, muscle aches, and stomach cramps. These symptoms can last anywhere between one and three days. A main complication of infection is dehydration, which is caused by severe fluid loss. This is why hydration is a large focus of norovirus treatment and symptom management. While no specific medication or vaccine exists, those who are infected can treat their symptoms by sipping water and clear broths. Sugary drinks and sodas should be avoided, officials say, as they can worsen symptoms. Once vomiting has subsided, patients may begin eating bland foods such as crackers, toast, bananas, and rice. It is essential to ensure that patients are getting enough rest to allow the body to recover.

One Leesfield & Partners client who experienced these consequences firsthand was a member of the crew who went to the infirmary for symptoms of nausea. Instead, he was erroneously given medication rapidly into his IV that clearly state in a black box warning label it should be given slowly injected deep into the muscle over a period of time. If these instructions were not adhered to, the label warned, there was an increased risk for gangrene, tissue injury, and/or amputation.
Tragically in this case, our client was in immediate agony. This was the start of a 17-hour journey in which his right arm would begin to blacken, the tissue dying slowly as cruise ship doctors searched online for ways to help. Eventually, he was able to seek medical attention on shore where doctors attempted to save his arm. They could not.
In the end, our client lost his right arm due to the errors of the doctors aboard the cruise ship. Our client was awarded over $3.3 million in arbitration thanks to the work of attorneys at Leesfield & Partners.
